C2PA Content Credentials

A signed manifest that travels with a media file and records where it came from and what was done to it. Widely adopted for images, audio and video by camera makers, creative software and the large model providers. The EU Code of Practice treats secured metadata like this as one of its two marking layers.

What it is

C2PA is the metadata half of provenance. A manifest records who created a file, with what tool, and what edits followed, and a signature makes it tamper-evident. It is the layer the EU Code of Practice calls secured metadata, paired with watermarking as the second layer. The practical weakness for text is that there is usually no file: text is pasted into a form or a chat window and the manifest stays behind. For documents that travel as files, such as PDFs, the standard is beginning to matter.

Known limits

Coverage for plain text is thin, because text is usually copied without any file container to carry a manifest.

When to use this entry

Use this entry when a question is about provenance metadata rather than invisible marks, or about images, audio and video.

Questions

Does C2PA work on plain text?

Only when the text is inside a file that can carry a manifest. Pasted text loses it.

Who supports C2PA?

Camera makers, creative software vendors, and the major model providers for images, audio and video.
